Sunday Handout

Pivot Sunday

Today is Pivot Sunday, a celebration of the partnership between Pivot Ministries and Stanwich.  Pivot Ministries is a Christ-centered, bible-based ministry for men. Its mission is to treat drug and alcohol addiction as a spiritual problem and return the men to their families usefully whole.  Pivot Ministries is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Rock Of Ages

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee;

Let the water and the blood,

From Thy wounded side which flowed,

Be of sin the double cure,

Save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands

Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;

Could my zeal no respite know,

Could my tears forever flow,

All for sin could not atone;

Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to Thy cross I cling;

Naked, come to Thee for dress;

Helpless, look to Thee for grace;

Foul, I to the fountain fly;

Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,

When my eyes shall close in death,

When I rise to worlds unknown,

And behold Thee on Thy throne,

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee.

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.  He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended to the dead.  On the third day He rose again.  He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Sunday Update

As we have been blessed with great weather and have had so many requests to stay outdoors, we will continue worshipping outside until the weather forces us indoors.  Once we move indoors, we will have two morning services at 9 AM and 11 AM in the Sanctuary.  Children and Student Ministries will be held at both services.  Registration is required.

* Thanksgiving Eve Service

Join us this Wednesday November 25 at 7 PM in the Sanctuary for our Thanksgiving Eve service as we worship God in song, gratitude, and reflection. This is a perfect way to lead yourself, your family, and your neighbor into a mindset of Thanksgiving.  We will also stream this event online.

* Trust, Truth, and Trauma:

 Is Forgiveness Politically Possible?

In a time of deep national division, Christians are called to be ambassadors of reconciliation. Sometimes, we know that reconciliation requires forgiveness, which proves to be one of the hardest things to offer to our political opponents. On November 30 at 7 PM, Pastor Nathan will interview Nancy R. Gibbs, Director of the Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center. They will explore the timely question: Is forgiveness politically possible?  This event is a Zoom webinar.

* Partnership To End Human Trafficking (PEHT)

We are so excited that our mission partner, Partnership to End Human Trafficking (PEHT), is about to open its doors to women who are coming out of human trafficking.  The PEHT House will be a place of healing and restoration and we are eager to make it a welcoming place.  Please pray for the staff and the women they will serve. Stanwich has "adopted" a room in the house and we are looking for volunteers help make it special.  Volunteers can sign up for one of our scheduled workdays: to paint or to help set up with the furnishings. You can also donate furnishings on their Amazon Wish List.  Be sure to choose "PEHT Wish List" from the shipping address options at checkout.  For more information please see the Missions page on our website.

* Art & Advent: Waiting with Hope

Ladies, join us on the three Advent Wednesdays, as Pastor Heather Wright leads a discussion via Zoom on Scripture and its related artwork.  Each week will examine a new artwork and the Bible passages related to them. These will include a Renaissance and an abstract painting, and a classical music piece.  This group will also meet on December 2, 9, 16 at 12 PM.

* Service of Remembrance & Hope

This service honors those who have experienced a loss. Whether it is grief from a divorce, losing a job, or the death of a loved one; the loss can be particularly challenging at this time of year. Join us as we recall that God's gift of HOPE can lead to praise, even in a time of sadness.  This invitation is extended to your family and friends.  Please invite others you know who have experienced a loss this year.  We will host this event on December 2 at 7 PM in the Sanctuary and will also stream online.

* Advent Meditations

Please join us in the Sanctuary for an hour of contemplative Advent-themed instrumental music as Sue Song plays the piano and Leon Reid plays the organ. You are invited to pray, read your Bible, and meditate while enjoying the music. Seating is limited; advance registration is required. This event will be held on December 3, 10, & 17 at 4 PM.

* Christmas Carol Hymn Sing

You are invited to  our Christmas Carol Hymn Sing on December 6 after the 11 AM morning service (around 11:15 AM) in the Sanctuary.  We will "sing to the Lord" (Psalm 95:1) with hymns that are in our church's hymnal and some of your Christmas favorites as well.

Guest Preacher

Rev. Richard Williams, Executive Director of Pivot Ministries

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.

Scripture - 2 Timothy 1:7

7For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Pastor: May God add His blessing to the reading of His holy word.

Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Preparation Song:

Speak Truth To My Heart

Speak truth to my heart,

For my own thoughts betray me.

Breathe life on my bones,

For this desert is leaving me thirsty.

Pour hope in my soul,

For the sorrow of the world is feeling heavy.

Holy Spirit, come,

And speak truth to my heart.

Prayer Of Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength.  We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Holy name.

Pastor: Therefore we proclaim the Mystery of Faith:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

Pivot Choir: "That's When You Bless Me"

The Lord Bless You And Keep You

The Lord bless you and keep you,

The Lord lift His countenance upon you,

And give you peace, and give you peace,

The Lord make His face to shine upon you

And be gracious unto you, and be gracious,

The Lord be gracious, gracious unto you.
