In January 2013, we installed new pew Bibles at Stanwich. The pastors and deacons decided to purchase the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible. Here are answers to some questions you may have:
What is the ESV?
The ESV Bible is an “essentially literal” translation of the Bible in contemporary English. The ESV Bible emphasizes “word-for-word” accuracy, literary excellence, and depth of meaning. It was created by a team of more than 100 leading evangelical scholars and pastors. Since its publication in 2001, the ESV has gained wide acceptance and is used and trusted by church leaders, numerous denominations, and millions of individuals around the world. (More info).
The Pastors and Deacons of Stanwich have researched the scholarship and accuracy of the ESV and find it to be exceptionally helpful for the understanding of Biblical truths. For other pastors’ and scholars’ perspectives, we recommend you view this video or read the articles linked below.
When Will We Have New Pew Bibles?
Through the generosity of a donor in the congregation, we already have funding for new pew Bibles and a pulpit Bible. They will be in the sanctuary beginning on Sunday, January 6, 2013.
What Will Happen to the Old Pew and Pulpit Bibles?
You will have an opportunity to bring home one of the old Bibles if you wish. With the remaining lot, our various mission partners, including the Pivot House, will receive them and put them to good use. The NIV pulpit Bible will be given a new home in the “upper room” above the sanctuary, where it can be read and enjoyed by those who gather for prayer and reflection there.
Will I Need a New Personal Bible?
There is nothing wrong with your NIV Bible. However, if you want to read from the same translation that we use in our sermons and teachings at Stanwich, we recommend getting an ESV Bible. And if you are interested in a more in-depth study, we highly recommend the ESV Study Bible. If you use this page to purchase your Bible, a portion of your payment will go to the church.
Will the Youth and Children Use the ESV Too?
The whole church will be using the ESV beginning in January. If your child does not yet have a Bible, we encourage you to view the above-mentioned link to find excellent youth and children’s Bibles.
